Mind Games & Digital Trails: When Mumbai’s Top Cop Came to School

The internet isn’t just a playground; it’s a crime scene waiting to happen—unless you know how to navigate it. On 19 January 2026, Grade IX students at Hiranandani Foundation School International, Powai, received a masterclass in digital survival from a man who knows the streets of Mumbai better than anyone: Dr. D. Shivanandhan.

As the retired Director General of Police for Maharashtra and a key architect of Mumbai’s post-2008 security, Dr. Shivanandhan brought 35 years of high-stakes experience to the classroom. But he wasn’t there to talk about old-school policing; he was there to talk about the new-age battle for our brains.

The Great Brain Hack

The most chilling takeaway? Your firewall might be fine, but your judgment might not be. Dr. Shivanandhan pointed out that modern cybercriminals rarely bother "hacking" a device when they can simply hack the human mind

By weaponizing fear, greed, and misinformation, scammers trick users into opening the door themselves. He backed this up with a staggering reality check: cybercrime in India has skyrocketed from ₹3,000 crores in 2023 to a projected ₹28,000 crores in 2024.

The New Rules of Engagement

To stay out of the statistics, Dr. Shivanandhan offered a simple, three-word mantra that every student should tattoo on their digital psyche:

Pause. Think. Act.

He warned the room that "Digital Arrests" are a myth designed to spark panic, and reminded students that cyberbullying isn’t just ‘drama’—it’s a criminal offense. In a world where every "like," "share," and "comment" creates a permanent digital footprint, the internet never forgets, and it certainly doesn't forgive.

The Law of the Digital Jungle

Dr. Shivanandhan’s message was sharp, unsentimental, and vital:

* The Internet Never Forgets: Your digital footprint isn’t written in sand; it’s etched in stone. Every post is a permanent record.

* Cyberbullying is a Crime: He stripped away the "internet prank" facade, reminding students that online harassment carries real-world legal consequences.

* The Three-Second Rule: Before you click, before you vent, before you share—Pause. Think. Act. > "They don't need your password if they can manipulate your panic," was the unspoken theme of the morning.

Intelligence in the Room

The Grade IX cohort didn’t just listen; they mined the expert. From asking how hackers bypass high-level encryption to debating the nuances of social media privacy, the students showed they were ready to be part of the solution.

Dr. Shivanandhan’s parting advice was practical and punchy: Awareness is your best armor. If things do go south, don't stay silent—dial 1930 or 1945 immediately.

In an era where our lives are lived through screens, this wasn’t just a school talk—it was a survival briefing. HFS International students walked away not just as tech users, but as digital skeptics, armed with the wisdom of a man who has spent 35 years protecting the city’s physical streets and is now helping the next generation protect their virtual ones.

Teachers' Day Celebrations at HFS International

The 2025 Teachers’ Day celebration at HFS International was a heartwarming and memorable event, uniquely beautiful in its execution and spirit.

The celebrations commenced with an inspiring address by the Principal, whose words deeply resonated with every member of the teaching community. She commended the dedication of every educator towards this noble profession and urged all to nurture an everlasting thirst for knowledge so we may continue to evolve and deliver better as teachers each day.

A highlight of the morning was a heartfelt poem, beautifully curated and recited by the Principal, titled “Journey of a Teacher.” It painted the teacher's path as adventurous, mystical, and enriching—acknowledging that while the journey may be challenging, the pursuit of knowledge is always joyful and fulfilling.

Adding depth to the moment, Mr. Ritesh Singh, IBDP Deputy Coordinator, offered a moving Hindi translation of the poem, which touched the hearts of all present.

The celebration continued with warm Teachers' Day messages shared by all level supervisors: Ms. Sejal Parikh (IBDP Coordinator) Ms. Pooja Mashalkar (CAIE Primary Coordinator) and Ms. Binaifer Gagrat (Beaumont HFSi Pre-Primary Coordinator)

Following a round of light refreshments, the teachers were treated to a delightful surprise—an elegant Red Carpet Teachers' Day Party organized by the IBDP students. The event featured lively student performances and engaging activities that perfectly captured the essence of the day. The energy, creativity, and gratitude displayed by the students made the celebration truly unforgettable.

The day was cherished by all, leaving behind smiles, memories, and a renewed sense of purpose—until we celebrate again next year.
